I graduated college – now what?!
We recently published a blog article for work about our college graduation experiences. One of the points that really resonated with me was that “over 96% of students plan to either begin a job or attend graduate school after graduation” according to BNC Research.
I graduated University of Delaware with a Bachelors in Social Work. I had ZERO desire to go back to school to get a Masters Degree.
Where did that leave me? In 2000, the best place to find a job was the Sunday NY Times. I submitted my resume to an ad calling for recent college grads & was called in for an “interview” a few days later. I wore my 1st “grown up” suit from The Limited – I can still picture it, grey slacks with a 1 button blazer.
The office I was going to was in the Empire State Building – I walked into a waiting room filled with people in suits filling out the same paperwork I was handed. My “interview” was really just a screening at a head hunter’s office. I was asked to take a test to help determine what field I should be placed in – the results? SOCIAL WORK OR MARKETING!
Before I even realized what was happening, I was walking across the city to the offices of NEW YORK Magazine. I had NO idea where I was going, who I was meeting with or what the position was for but hey, nothing was stopping this 22 year old from her dream of living in NYC.
My 1st interview was a success! I still wasn’t 100% what the job was for but I accepted the invitation to come back the next day and meet with the other director that I would be working for. I was taken with the woman I interviewed with – Gerry had been at NY Mag for years, was the Special Events Director and was looking for someone to be her right hand.
OMG – I WAS INTERVIEWING AT NEW YORK MAGAZINE IN THE EVENTS DEPARTMENT!!!!
I mailed my thank you letters (yes, snail mail!) & less than a week later, I got the call that they wanted ME to be the new Special Events Coordinator at NEW YORK Magazine starting the following Monday.
